Argonauts seeking gold in the Rocky Mountain areas needed some kind of local law and order. Being so far from any of the capitals of the four federal territories (Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico and Utah) the miners set up formally organized mining districts with constitutions that provided for names, boundaries and officers of the districts and provided a method of claim proving and dispute settlement. While the unofficial Jefferson Territory acted as a quasi-government over the area, the miners found that the miners courts were more effective in keeping the peace among the gold seekers. The following document provided for the establishment and laws of the Spanish Bar Mining District near present day Idaho Springs. The Eureka and Central Mining District laws are also posted.
