Sometimes, the only way a product could advertise was
through their trademarks. Encouraging customer loyalty to a
particular brand was an important element of trademark
design as the company tried to reflect desirable qualities
of their product onto the trademark. Flour sacks were a
common household item and attractive trademarks lured
customers to buy certain brands. A flour sack with a pretty
scene or interesting topic was certainly more desirable than
a plain burlap sack. Sometimes the issues of
the day were also reflected on trademarks such as the Free
Coinage flour sack below. In the 1890s, the Populists ran on
a platform of free and unlimited coinage of silver which was
important to Colorado's mining economy. Such trademarks were
a good way to promote a cause. |
