Cigars were one of the first products to be trademarked. In
1875 the U.S. government estimated that the average person
smoked 48 cigars a year (which included men, women, and
children). By 1900 more than 27,000 cigar factories existed
in the United States. Because of technological advancements
in lithography and tin, cigar box labeling became an art form.
The detail on some of these was extremely fine and many showed
Colorado scenes representative of the time period. These
cigar advertisements must have also had a role in promoting
Colorado tourism as the Ice Palace Favoritos below
indicates. The famous Leadville Ice Palace was built in the
fall of 1895 and included a skating rink, restaurant,
ballroom, gaming rooms and even a carousel house. It lasted
3 months until late March, 1896 when the ice began to
melt.
