The "Ludlow Massacre"

Coal mine strikes became more common in 1913 as the United Mine Workers of America encouraged strikes in the northern and southern Colorado coal fields. One such strike at the Moffat Mine caused tension in Oak Creek in Routt County in October of 1913. As this correspondence to Governor Ammons illustrates, some people believed that miners drinking liquor would make things more volatile between the union miners and the strike breakers in the town. This event was a precursor to the trouble that took place at Ludlow 6 months later.
