Colorado State Capitol Virtual Tour

The Grand Staircase

Even though Elijah Myers designed the building to have two staircases at opposite sides of the building, the Board of Capitol Managers voted to place one staircase from the basement to the second floor in the middle of the rotunda. The entire staircase consists of 77 marble steps and 176 brass balustrades that have been embellished with stylized oak and olive leaves and acorns. The louvered circular lamps were added after the staircase was completed.
