Colorado State Capitol Virtual Tour

Samuel Nicholson

In 1882 Nicholson came to Leadville, Colorado, as a miner working the rock for a dollar a day. After many years of mining Nicholson struck it rich, and soon was elected mayor of his adopted city, Leadville. In 1920 Nicholson was elected to the United States Senate. Nicholson was also the director of the Denver National Bank, president of the Western Mining Company, and was a prominent member of the Denver Tramway Company. When Nicholson died in 1923, he bequeathed half of his estate to the Denver Presbyterian Hospital while the other half went for an addition to Denver General Hospital.
