Colorado State Capitol Virtual Tour

John Love

After obtaining a law degree from the University of Denver, Love moved back to Colorado Springs to open a successful practice. By 1954 Love was the president of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, and as such was instrumental in the development of the United States Air Force Academy. In 1963 Governor Love began his eleven-year job as Governor of Colorado. Not since Governor Gilpin especially publicized the state in the 1800's has anyone been quite the promoter for Colorado that Love was. He campaigned to bring the Olympic Games to Colorado, although that dream was never realized. He was a popular governor, however, for implementing a program of tax reform called "freeport legislation" and for supporting Colorado soldiers by visiting Vietnam and Cambodia in 1972.
