GOVERNOR OWENS SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR
DISTRICT ATTORNEY IN THE ELEVENTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT

DENVER -- Governor Bill Owens has announced that he is seeking applicants for the position of District Attorney in the Eleventh Judicial District. This district includes Chaffee, Custer, Fremont, and Park Counties.

The elected District Attorney, Edward Rodgers III, has informed the Governor that he will resign from this position on September 21, 2004. Rodgers has accepted a position as Guardian Ad Litem with the El Paso County Office of the Child's Representative.

Under Article VI, Section 20 of the Colorado Constitution, the Governor is responsible for appointing a district attorney in the event of a vacancy. This appointment will remain effective until the general election in November 2004.

The qualifications to become a district attorney are set forth in Article VI, Section 13 of the Colorado Constitution. "No person shall be eligible to the office of [district attorney] unless he shall be a qualified elector of the judicial district at the time of his election or selection and shall have been licensed to practice law in this state for five years."
