OWENS APPOINTS TERRANCE J. HAYES TO THE COAL MINE BOARD OF EXAMINERS

(DENVER) – Gov. Bill Owens today announced the appointment of Terrance J. Hayes to the Coal Mine Board of Examiners.

"The Board of Examiners helps train and certify our state's hard-working miners, ensuring that the industry remains safe and efficient," said Owens. "Terrence Hayes's knowledge and experience with the mining industry will serve the board well."

Terrance Hayes is a member of the Colorado Mining Association and of Colorado Coal Mine Rescue. He received his Colorado Mine Foreman certification in 1977, and has worked as a mine foreman for the past 27 years. Since 1996, Hayes has been employed as a safety director for Oxbow Mining, LLC, first for the Sanborn Creek Mine, and most recently at the Elk Creek Mine. He was the recipient of the Pinnacol Assurance Large Mine Safety Award in 1999.

The Coal Mine Board of Examiners prepare and conduct examinations for all applicants to positions in coal mines that require certification under federal law. The board issues certificates of competency to those who qualify. The board also provides assistance in developing curricula for coal-miner training programs.

The five members of the Board serve four-year terms, and require Senate confirmation.
