OWENS: SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM "SUCCEEDS FOR COLORADO CHILDREN"

(Denver) – Gov. Bill Owens today released the 2004 School Accountability Reports, which showed that the number of schools rated Unsatisfactory was cut by more than half, dropping from 32 to 13.

"The data in this year's reports underscore the importance of an accountability system that points out challenges and rewards achievement," said Gov. Bill Owens. "We are seeing positive movement among low-performing schools. This accountability system works. That's what we're seeing in the numbers, and that's what teachers and parents are telling us."

Gov. Owens was joined by Bill Moloney, Commissioner of the Colorado Board of Education, and Dwight Jones, Superintendent of the Fountain-Fort Carson School District.

Governor Owens stressed the importance of maintaining the strength of Colorado's school accountability system: "Some may believe that 2005 is the year to slow down our testing program, or weaken our accountability system. I will oppose any effort to weaken our reforms or take tools out of the hands of our parents and teachers."
