OWENS APPOINTS PETER A. WEIR TO DISTRICT COURT

(DENVER) – Gov. Bill Owens today announced the appointment of Peter A. Weir of Golden to the District Court in the 1st Judicial District (Gilpin and Jefferson Counties). Weir is filling a vacancy caused by the retirement of the Hon. Frank Plaut. This appointment is effective September 27, 2004.

"Pete Weir brings a wealth of expertise to the bench," said Owens. "His collective service as a chief deputy district attorney and as the executive director of the Colorado District Attorneys' Council has prepared him well to assume the challenges confronting a district court judge. I am confident that Pete Weir will be an exceptional judge for the people of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties."

Weir currently serves as the executive director of the Colorado District Attorneys' Council. He has served in this capacity since 1999 and his primary function is to represent the 22 elected district attorneys. From 1986 to 1999, Weir was the deputy and chief deputy district attorney in the 1st Judicial District. He practiced with the law firm of Wiggins & Smith from 1982 to 1986. From 1979 to 1982, he was a deputy district attorney in the 4th Judicial District. He earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his law degree from the University of Denver.

The initial term of office for a district court judge is a provisional term of two years, after which the incumbent must stand for retention to serve an additional six years. The annual salary for this position is $107,044.
