OWENS APPOINTS DEBBIE STAFFORD TO FILL VACANCY LEFT BY THE DEATH OF REP. GARY MCPHERSON
DENVER – Governor Bill Owens today appointed Debbie Stafford of Aurora to fill the remainder of Rep. Gary McPherson’s term in the Colorado House of Representatives in the 62nd General Assembly, which runs until January 10, 2001. McPherson was killed in a plane crash in Canada on October 12.
Debbie Stafford is a candidate in House District 40 in Aurora where McPherson served as a state representative since 1994. Stafford will be sworn in today, Thursday, October 26 in the House Chambers in the State Capitol at 4:00 PM.
"I am confident that Debbie will serve out the remainder of McPherson’s term as he would have wished," said Gov. Owens.
State statute requires that the vacancy be filled within a 15-day period and that the appointee be in the same political party as the person who held the seat. Rep. McPherson was a Republican, as is Stafford.
