OWENS ENCOURAGES COLORADANS TO VOLUNTEER FOR SECOND ANNUAL COLORADO CARES DAY ON JULY 29th
Kick-off rally in Denver at the State Capitol
DENVER – To promote volunteerism across Colorado and to celebrate the state’s 124th birthday, Governor Bill Owens will proclaim Saturday, July 29 the second annual Colorado Cares: A Day to Give Back to Colorado. A kick-off rally and volunteer fair is scheduled that day in Denver on the west steps of the State Capitol at 8:30 AM. Ed Greene from 9KUSA is the master of ceremonies. Following the rally, the Governor will travel to Bailey to plant trees near the site of the Hi Meadow fire that destroyed several dozens homes in June.
"Volunteerism is an important part of our heritage," said Gov. Owens. "Since a unified effort between government, businesses, faith-based and service organizations can effectively identify and address vital community needs better than government alone, it seems appropriate to have an annual birthday celebration for Colorado that is focused on community service and giving back to our state."
Colorado Cares Day is a grassroots effort that emphasizes non-governmental solutions to Colorado’s challenges and encourages citizens to volunteer in their communities. Last year, the governor’s call for volunteerism assembled together thousands of people from across the state. While they were working in different regions of the state and did not know each other, they shared a basic belief in the benefits of volunteerism for Colorado’s future.
Volunteer activities are planned throughout the state such as an Aurora neighborhood clean-up sponsored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver and ballpark renovation at City Park by AmeriCorps and the Governor’s Commission on Community Service.
