GOVERNOR DISBURSES CHECKS FOR $1 MILLION TO JEFFERSON COUNTY

DENVER  -  Today, Governor Bill Owens disbursed $1 million from the State's Disaster Fund to support the victims of the Columbine High School tragedy. Checks were sent to the following entities:

  • $500,000 to Jefferson County R-1 Schools;
  • $375,000 to Jefferson County, which will be allocated to the County, Sheriff, and District Attorney;
  • $125,000 to the Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

    "The impact of this tragedy has been enormous. Not just in Littleton and southern Jefferson County, but throughout our entire state," said Owens. "These funds will assist the community and local government in providing the services to those in need."

    While many entities were impacted by the tragedy, money was sent to the organizations that have borne much of the initial responsibility in responding to the tragedy. The State Constitution doesn't allow for individuals to receive funds directly from the state.

    The Governor's Task Force on Victims Support for the Columbine High School tragedy will facilitate long-term public and private funding necessary to assist with the broader impact of this tragedy.
