DENVER - Governor Bill Owens today appointed William Ferguson of Ridgway as a Ouray County Commissioner to replace the late Joseph Mattivi who passed away on July 21.
"William Ferguson is a long time business and community leader who comes highly recommended by citizens throughout Ouray County," Owens said. "I am pleased to appoint him to replace the late Joseph Mattivi who served the county so well."
Ferguson, a Democrat, is involved with ranching, landscape, nursery, and planning businesses and is a co-founder of the Southwest Data Center.
While state election law allows a county political party vacancy committee to fill a county office in the event of a death or resignation, a valid vacancy committee appointed by the Ouray County Democratic Central Committee did not exist at the time of Commissioner Mattivi's death. The Governor has the power to appoint a new commissioner if a valid vacancy committee does not exist.
