DENVER – Governor Bill Owens today re-appointed Stephen A. Sonnenberg of Lakewood to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. Owens also announced that he was appointing Brian J. Cree of Littleton to serve as a new member of the board.

The Board consists of seven members who are appointed by the Governor, serve four-year terms, and require Senate confirmation. According to state statute, five of the seven members shall be individuals with substantial experience in the oil and gas industry, and at least two of those members shall have a college degree in petroleum engineering or geology. The two remaining members shall not be employed by the oil and gas industry and have formal training or substantial experience in agriculture, land reclamation, environmental protection, or soil conservation.

Stephen A. Sonnenberg has been reappointed to serve as a member from the Sixth Congressional District. Sonnenberg is a petroleum geologist at North American Resources Company and served as vice president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists from 1995 to 1996. He received his doctorate in geology from Colorado School of Mines and his master’s in geology from Texas A & M University. Sonnenberg will occupy one of the positions which must be filled by a person with experience in the petroleum industry and with a college degree in geology.

Brian Cree will serve as a member from the Fifth Congressional District. Cree is the executive vice president and chief operating officer for the Patina Oil & Gas Corporation. He has his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa. Cree will occupy one of the positions which, by statute, must be filled by a person with experience in the petroleum industry.

The Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is responsible for enforcing the provisions of the Oil and Gas Conservation Act; promoting the development and utilization of oil and gas in Colorado; and protecting public and private interests by prevention of waste in such production and utilization.
