LT. GOV. O'BRIEN TO JOIN LEGISLATORS TO PROMOTE CAPITOL BLOOD DRIVE TOMORROW

The Office of Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien and the Governor's Commission on Community Service will be partnering with Senators Betty Boyd and Bill Cadman along with Representatives Anne McGihon and Spencer Swalm to host a Capitol Blood Drive to support the Bonfils Blood Center's life-saving efforts.  The Bonfils Blood Mobile will be located in the West parking lot of the Capitol on Tuesday, February 3rd from 10:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  To make an appointment, call 303.363.2300 or 800.365.0006.  If scheduling an appointment online, please reference site code 1012 when searching for a donation location.

Bonfils Blood Center needs 4,000 volunteers to give blood each week to meet the needs of patients undergoing cancer therapy, requiring emergency surgery, or receiving other medical treatments.

"Giving blood takes so little of our time and effort, but it can literally save a life," said Lt. Gov. O'Brien.  "In the spirit of community service, taking time out of our day to make a life-saving donation is important."

Blood donations tend to decline in the winter months due to adverse road conditions and the cold and flu season, making it all the more important for healthy individuals to support patients in need by giving blood.  Blood donation is one of the easiest ways to volunteer.  With a single blood donation, individuals can save or enhance the lives of up to three patients.

The Governor's Commission on Community Service serves as a catalyst for the promotion and expansion of community service and volunteerism for all Coloradans.  The commission serves as an effective means to addressing civic and social issues and improving the overall well being of communities throughout the state.  For further information about the Commission and its activities, call 303-866-6426; or toll free at 866-333-2202.  The Commission's website is: http://www.colorado.gov/gccs/

For more than 65 years, Bonfils Blood Center has successfully managed the community blood supply and played an integral role in Colorado's healthcare system.  Bonfils Blood Center supplies blood to more than 200 healthcare facilities and needs to collect more than 4,000 blood donations weekly to meet the needs of the community and to be prepared for any unexpected events. For information about Bonfils Blood Center please call 303.366.2000 or visit www.bonfils.org.
