LT. GOV. BARBARA O'BRIEN CELEBRATES THANK YOU MENTOR DAY, JAN. 22

If you have a mentor who is helping you through life, reach out and say "thank you" on Thursday, Jan. 22.  January is National Mentoring Month, and Thank You Mentor Day is observed to recognize the contributions of so many people, who have had such a strong, positive effect on so many lives.

"This is a great opportunity to express your appreciation for those who help others get ahead," said Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien. "Research shows that volunteer mentors play a powerful role in reducing substance abuse and behavior problems while increasing the prospects for a productive life."

Thank Your Mentor Day promotes "Four Ways to Honor Your Mentor":

  1. Contact your mentor directly to express your appreciation;
  2. Pass on what you received by becoming a mentor to a young person in your community;
  3. Make a financial contribution to a local mentoring program; and,
  4. Write a tribute to your mentor for posting on www.whomentoredyou.org.

In Colorado, the lead local partner for National Mentoring Month is the Governor's Commission on Community Service, under the office of Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien.

The Governor's Commission on Community Service serves as a catalyst for the promotion and expansion of community service and volunteerism to all Colorado residents as an effective means to address civic and social issues and improve the overall well-being of communities through the state.

National Mentoring Month is spearheaded by the Harvard Mentoring Project of the Harvard School of Public Health, MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership, and the Corporation for National and Community Service.  Media partners include: CBS, FOX, NBC, MTV, Comcast, Time Warner, and the National Association of Broadcasters.  For more information on National Mentoring Month, please visit:  www.NationalMentoringMonth.org.
