LT. GOV. BARBARA O'BRIEN CALLS FOR ACTION ON MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

Register MLK Events Online

The Governor's Commission on Community Service (GCCS), under the Office of Lieutenant Governor Barbara O'Brien, is calling on the people of Colorado to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 21, 2008 by making it a day on, not a day off.

Every year, the nation honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the third Monday in January. Lt. Gov. O'Brien is encouraging Colorado residents to join the growing trend of making it a day of service.

GCCS is registering events on their website so that people can easily find service projects that interest them at www.colorado.gov/gccs/mlk.html. The intent is to create a Colorado tradition of engaging increasing numbers of people to honor Dr. King's life and teaching through public service.

"We honor the life and legacy of Dr. King by doing things that help others and strengthen communities," said Lt. Governor Barbara O'Brien.

The Governor's Commission is encouraging people, organizations, and businesses to:

  • Create an MLK Day service project,
  • Register their project through our online registry  www.colorado.gov/gccs/mlk.html
  • Volunteer for a project by using our online registry to locate one in their community, and
  • Participate in other activities including the free public reception and concert at 6:00 p.m., Jan. 17, at Boettcher Concert Hall, and the MLK Day Marade at 8:30 a.m., Jan. 21, at City Park in Denver.

The Martin Luther King Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need, such as fixing up a school or senior center, or it may meet a need of the spirit, such as building a sense of community or mutual responsibility.

Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve."

To register your project, or locate a project in your community go to: http://www.colorado.gov/gccs/mlk.html.
