TOYA NELSON NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION ON COMMUNITY SERVICE

 

Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien today named Toya Nelson executive director of the Governor's Commission on Community Service.

By Executive Order, the Governor's Commission on Community Service falls under the Office of the Lt. Governor.

 

Nelson has more than 25 years of public and community service and is currently serving as a Mayor-appointed commissioner for the Denver Urban Renewal Authority and is co-founder of the African American Voter Registration Project.

 

"Toya's extensive background in public and community service is a testament to her commitment to serving others," said Lt. Gov. O'Brien.  "We are looking forward to her leadership and energy with further engaging Coloradans in community service."

 

In her new role, Nelson will serve as commission staff supervisor over Colorado's AmeriCorps State Program and provide leadership and support for the gubernatorial-appointed Commission, which is charged with promoting and expanding community service and volunteerism throughout Colorado.  She will begin immediately.

 

"I am humbled and deeply honored to be selected to take on this very important position," said Nelson.  "I look forward to working with the talented people in the offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor to build a world class community service program."

 

Her previous experience includes five years with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development as an administrative manager and as a transportation manager, and six years as director, Bureau of Transit and Local Transportation Aids.  In addition, she has held leadership positions with organizations that have included: Denver Urban Renewal Authority, 100 Citizens For Denver Schools, Urban League, and United Way of Dane County.  She is a 1968 political science graduate of Colorado State University.
