LT. GOV. O'BRIEN KICKS OFF COLORADO'S FIRST EVER AMERICORP WEEK, MAY 13-20

The number of Americans who have taken the AmeriCorps pledge to "get things done for America" and dedicated themselves to intense service in exchange for an education award will pass the half-million mark this spring.  This is just one of the many achievements that will be celebrated during the first-ever AmeriCorps Week scheduled for May 13-20.  During AmeriCorps Week, AmeriCorps and its nonprofit and community partners across the country will thank AmeriCorps members and alumni for the impact they've had, acknowledge the many contributions of public and private community groups to the program, and urge more Americans of all ages and backgrounds to sign up for a year of service in AmeriCorps.

In Colorado, AmeriCorps is administered by the Governor's Commission on Community Service and managed by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

"National AmeriCorps Week is about recognizing the selfless work of the thousands of men and women who have generously given their time to serve others," said Lt. Governor Barbara O'Brien. I'm very proud that Colorado is firmly counted in that number."

Since 1994, more than 12,500 Coloradans have taken the AmeriCorps pledge and have worked throughout the US and in various Colorado communities.  In the 2006 program year alone, more than 29,000 Coloradans directly benefited from service provided by AmeriCorps members. During that time, AmeriCorps members recruited nearly 5,000 community volunteers.

"This is such a good time to highlight the work of AmeriCorps," said Toya Nelson, the newly appointed executive director of the Governor's Commission on Community Service.  "This week not only gives us the opportunity to thank and salute those who have given of their time and talent, but it also gives us the chance to promote the wonderful opportunities AmeriCorps offers future members."

About AmeriCorps

In the 2004-05 program year, 12,000 students in grades k-12 received tutoring, 9,200 acres of public land & habitats were restored and serviced, 298 miles of trail or public park areas were maintained and cleaned, over 700 children were immunized, 5,200 at risk youth and children were mentored, and nearly 600 people participated in training devoted to parenting-skill development.

AmeriCorps members serve either one or two-year terms. Upon completion of their service, members are eligible for an education award of $4,725 that can be used to pay back student loans or cover tuition costs. Colorado AmeriCorps members have received more than $21 million in education awards since the program¿s beginning in 1994.
