Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien joined Sen. Betty Boyd, Peer Assistance Services and others in highlighting the growing issue of prescription drug abuse. Race to the Top Recommendations Go to Gov. Ritter -- November 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien and Education Commissioner Dwight Jones helped present recommendations for the federal Race to the Top grant for education reform. Hundreds of volunteers helped shape the proposal from August through November. The final proposal goes to the U.S. Department of Education January 17, 2010.

Lt. Gov. O' Brien Finishes Colorado Kids Outdoors Tour in Golden


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien wrapped up her statewide, four-month long Colorado Kids Outdoors tour in Golden today at the Colorado Mountain Club. The 11-stop tour was designed to find out what communities are doing to reconnect kids to the outdoors and discover what barriers still exist that deter children from participating in outside activities. Lt. Gov. O'Brien Rallies for Ovarian Cancer Awareness


Lt. Gov. O'Brien, Rep. Diana DeGette and KMGH-TV's Bertha Lynn spoke to a rally to promote ovarian cancer awareness on the west steps of the Capitol on September 4, 2009. Every year, more than 300 women in Colorado are diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Announces $80 million in Federal Mineral and Severance Funds to Local Governments


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien announced an unprecedented $80 million dollars in funds for local governments and school districts to be used as needed in their communities. The revenues are to off-set energy production impacts and went to 509 jurisdictions statewide.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Releases Rehabilitated Raptor in Pueblo


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien released a rehabilitated female American Kestrel into the wild at the Nature & Raptor Center of Pueblo on July 30, 2009. Lt. Gov. O'Brien was in Pueblo for her Colorado Kids Outdoors tour to help reconnect kids to nature. A group from the Eastside Boys & Girls Club were at the Nature & Raptor Center at the invitation of Lt. Gov. O'Brien.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Visits Salida to Talk Kids & Outdoors and the Economy


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien visited Salida on July 17 to hold a forum on reconnecting kids to the outdoors. She visited the Colorado State Parks Junior Ranger program and also talked with community leaders about agriculture and the arts as economic development in the community.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Announces Kids' Outdoor Bill of Rights


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien released the Colorado Outdoor Bill of Rights, ten activities Colorado kids told her they believe everyone in the state should have an opportunity to experience before they grow up. She made the announcement on the steps of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS) on July 15.

Kids' Outdoor Activity in Steamboat


Steamboat Springs -- Lt.Gov. Barbara O'Brien on June 23 took her Colorado Kids Outdoors tour to Steamboat Springs, visiting a Rocky Mountain Youth Corps site doing trail work and restoration on Snake Island. Rocky Mountain Youth Corps has received Recovery Act funding to help put youth to work and assist local communities.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Joins Children's Campaign for 2009 KidsCount



Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien joined Colorado Children's Campaign (CCC) acting president Chris Watney and board chair Katherine Gold on June 15, 2009 to announce 2009 KidsCount, the CCC's annual report on children in Colorado. The report shows children in poverty are growing and there is a need for quality child care.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Visits Laboratory for Atmospheric & Space Physics - June 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien, co-chair of the Colorado Space Coalition, toured the University of Colorado's Laboratory for Atmospheric & Space Physics in Boulder on June 2, 2009 with Chancellor Phil DiStefano. LASP is one of the top-tier space research labs in the world and allows CU students hands-on experience. It is the only laboratory to have been involved in projects to every planet in the solar system.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Helps Boost May as Rugby Month - May 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien helped proclaim May as Rugby Month in Colorado. She presented a proclamation to Rich Cortez, president of the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union and received a rugby jacket from the group. Also present were the Colorado High School Rugby champions East High School of Denver, Colorado Youth Rugby Player of the Year Jack White, Rugby USA, Glendale Raptors, Rocky Mountain Challenge Tournament representatives and Denver Highlanders Rugby Club.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Maps Out Strategy for Race to the Top Federal Grant - April 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien, Gov. Bill Ritter, Education Commissioner Dwight Jones and Office of Economic Development Director Don Elliman hosted a meeting on April 27 at the Auraria campus to map out a strategy for Colorado's competitive bid for federal 'Race to the Top' dollars. About 200 stakeholders from business, government, education, nonprofit and community groups attended the meeting.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien Helps Enrollment Health Care Fair for Kids & Moms - April 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien spoke to an enrollment fair at Salud Family Health Center in Longmont on April 24. Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing gave grants to organizations around the state to help get eligible children and pregnant moms enrolled in basic health care through CHP+ or Medicaid.

Race to the Top Team - April 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien wants a team of innovators to help Colorado prepare its bid for an estimated $500 million in Race to the Top federal education grant funds. She says the effort will require a wide array of people who can ensure that Colorado submits the best application in the country for the competitive funding, which is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

About 600 students from the metro area participated in the event sponsored by the National Education Association and Colorado Education Association at the Sewall Ballroom in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Martin Luther King Marade - January 2009


Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien received the torch, spoke and laid the wreath at the Martin Luther King statue during Martin Luther King Day January 19, 2009. It was the largest crowd in the event's history, with an estimated 20,000 people taking part in the opening ceremony and the march from Denver's City Park to Civic Center.

150th Anniversary of the Colorado Gold Rush - January 2009


On January 7, 2009, Lt. Gov. O'Brien kicked off a year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Idaho Springs. Idaho Springs resident Bill Lee played George Andrew Jackson, who discovered gold on Jan. 7, 1859 at the confluence of Chicago & Clear Creeks. Omer Humble of the Idaho Springs Historical Society received the governor's proclamation honoring the 150th anniversary.
