Colorado's 2013 Child Passenger Safety
Technician and Instructor of the Year
The 2013 Child Passenger Safety Technician and Technician-Instructor of the Year were awarded on Friday, September 20, 2013. The two award recipients were selected based upon nominations submitted by the friends, family, co-workers, and community partners.
Congratulations to Juanita Montoya for being selected as Colorado's 2013 Child Passenger Safety
Technician of the Year; Montoya was preparing for a Food Drive at Servicios de La Raza in Denver at the time the award was presented. Congratulations to Janet Werst for being selected as Colorado's 2013 Child Passenger Safety Technician-Instructor of the Year; Werst was volunteering as government liaison for Red Cross in Larimer County at the time the award was presented.
“With nearly three out of four child restraint seats installed incorrectly, these women have stepped up to help make sure everyone in Colorado has the opportunity to keep children safe in a vehicle” said Corporal Heather Cobler of the Colorado State Patrol and Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Team Colorado Coordinator.
Using and installing child safety seats is often frustrating for parents, and thus the need has arisen for technicians to assist Colorado has over 1,000 technicians and 38 instructors across the state. CPS Team Colorado has approximately 140 designated inspection stations, where parents can go to make sure their car seat is properly installed by a certified technician or instructor. Juanita Montoya, from Servicios de La Raza, in Denver, CO, was nominated as a CPS Technician for her
willingness to go above and beyond what is required of a CPS Technician. Jaunita makes house calls, works with local media, and attends other agency events when they are in need of staffing, Thanks to her skills as a bilingual CPS Technician, families are referred to her from organizations and technicians across the Denver-Metro area.
Juanita became a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician in 2008 and serves her community at Servicios de La Raza as a Program Coordinator. Her program provides basic emergency services such as food, clothing, and car seats to residents of Colorado in need.
Janet Werst, from University of Colorado Health, and Safe Kids - Larimer County, who was nominated as a CPS Technician-Instructor "displays passion for serving others in the field of child passenger safety that is unparalleled. She not only inspires her students in class to be the best technicians 'technically' but also models how to connect with the families we serve, other students, co-workers, etc. Janet Werst possesses an amazing ability to lead with a clear vision of a comprehensive CPS Program." Janet became a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician in 2003, and certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician-Instructor in 2006.
Janet currently provides services to her community as the Injury Prevention Coordinator and Safe Kids Larimer County Coordinator at University of Colorado Health - Northern Region.
