Driver Charged In Hit and Run

Colorado State Patrol Troopers have arrested a 21-year-old Denver man in connection with a
fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in Lakewood on July 20. Shortly after noon today, Troopers
obtained a warrant for Derrick L. Fransua, whom they then arrested at his residence.

Fransua is the suspected driver of a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was traveling southbound on
Kipling Street shortly before 10 p.m. on July 20. The Chrysler traveled through a red light at the
intersection of Kipling and West Asbury Avenue, colliding with a pedestrian in the
crosswalk. The pedestrian, 15-year-old Gerard Julien of Lakewood, sustained fatal injuries as a
result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Chrysler fled the scene without
stopping and was recovered in the days following the crash.

Fransua will be booked into the Jefferson County Detentions facility on suspicion of: leaving the
scene of an accident involving death (class-3 felony); vehicular homicide - reckless driving
(class-4 felony), tampering with physical evidence (class-6 felony), engaging in a speed contest
(class-1 misdemeanor traffic infraction), reckless driving (class-2 misdemeanor traffic
infraction), and false reporting to authorities (class-3 misdemeanor).

Fransua's bond will be set at $10,000 (cash). Requests for booking photos should be directed to

The crash is still under investigation.

The Colorado State Patrol still is seeking the driver of a dark blue Volkswagen Jetta, who may be
