On May 18, 2012, at 6:35 PM, the Colorado State Patrol responded to a one vehicle crash on
Highway 115 that resulted in the death of the sole occupant/driver.
A 2004 Hyundai Tiburon was traveling southbound near milepost 21 when the driver failed to
negotiate a right hand curve and the Tiburon began to rotate clockwise. The driver
overcorrected causing the Tiburon to rotate counterclockwise. The Tiburon traveled off the
left side of the road, striking an embankment, large boulders, and then continued airborne to
where it collided with the hillside. The Tiburon rolled along the hillside to where it came to
rest on its top facing south.
Although the Tiburon’s driver, 23-year-old Clayton Michael Hershberger of Westcliffe, was wearing
his seatbelt, he sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the
scene of the accident and the next of kin were notified.
Alcohol and excessive speed are suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.
The Colorado State Patrol would like remind all motorists to please drive safe for the
upcoming holiday weekend.
