The Department is pleased to announce that Print On Demand (POD) will begin implementation the last week of March 2014 with three counties (Boulder, Larimer and Garfield), and then every week thereafter until May 30, 2014 at which time POD will be implemented with all 64 counties and the State Title and Registration Section. A listing of implementation dates by county can be obtained by clicking here.

In general, POD is a process that allows for certain license plates to be printed upon customer request/demand instead of having inventory sitting on county shelves. This will free up money in the License Plate Cash Fund, C.R.S. 42-3-301, to be used for high demand high volume license plates (i.e., green and white passenger). To accomplish this the Department in concert with the County Clerks and Recorder, Department of Corrections Colorado Correctional Industries, and the Governor’s Office of Information Technology has implemented processes and programming to complete POD in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible.

All license plates have the ability to be POD, the Department, working with the County Clerk and Recorders, has determined that low usage and certain other license plates would be POD. These include Group Special, Alumni, Military and other low demand plates like SMM Exempt and Horseless Carriage. Overall, the license plates that will be POD represent 13.25% of annual issued license plates and 17.32% of vehicles registered with those license plates. The real benefit of POD is that unlike today, when a constituent desires one of the low issuance license plates and the license plate is not on hand at the county, the constituent will no longer have to choose another license plate or make a second trip into the county when the plate is recovered from another county to provide to this constituent.
