GOV. RITTER CONGRATULATES LEVEL 3 EON FOR WINNING $13.7 MILLION IN RECOVERY ACT BROADBAND GRANTS

Gov. Bill Ritter today applauded Broomfield-based Level 3 EON for being awarded $13.7 million in grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for broadband infrastructure projects in six states. The grants were awarded by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

“A growing number of Colorado companies are winning grants and contracts from the Recovery Act, helping them to thrive while advancing critical infrastructure projects in this state and across the country,” said Gov. Ritter. “I congratulate Level 3 EON for these latest awards that will help them grow and create jobs.”

Level 3 won six grants to install high-speed Internet in Georgia, Kansas, California, Texas, Florida and Tennessee. Level 3 EON is a subsidiary of Level 3 Communications Inc.

The grants were among a number of awards announced today by the Department of Commerce. The awards, chosen through a competitive process, are part of a $4.7 billion program called Broadband Technology Opportunities Program. More awards are expected to be announced in coming weeks. A total of $7.2 billion will be distributed for broadband projects.

This is the second broadband infrastructure project awarded so far in Colorado. The Peetz Telephone Cooperative in northeast Colorado was awarded $1.5 million to provide high-speed Internet to the community for the first time.

At least $6.7 billion in Recovery Act funds is expected to come to Colorado through more than 100 different programs. For more information about the Recovery Act in Colorado, visit www.colorado.gov/recovery.
