LT. GOV. O'BRIEN HELPS RECOGNIZE HEALTHY SCHOOLS

Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien today helped Education Commissioner Dwight Jones and the Colorado Legacy Foundation announce new healthy school guidelines and honor schools that have healthy programs.

"Colorado may be the leanest state in the nation, but more than a quarter of our children are overweight and obese. There is a strong link between healthy kids and learning, so it's a natural that schools have a role in teaching healthy habits. Congratulations to the Legacy Foundation for putting together these important best practices and honoring the people who are doing something about it," said Lt. Gov. O'Brien.

Lt. Gov. O'Brien announced the five best practices published today by the Legacy Foundation:

  • Healthy policies adopted by the local school boards.
  • Qualified staff to properly teach nutrition and exercise.
  • Self-assessment tools to inventory the policies.
  • Provide district leadership on nutrition, activity and health education.
  • Implementation and making it happen.

Commissioner Dwight Jones recognized 11 schools and two individuals for their innovation in health and education:

  • Adams County School District 14
  • Boulder Valley School District
  • Denver Public Schools
  • Douglas County School District
  • Durango School District
  • East Grand School District
  • Garfield School District
  • Gunnison High School
  • High Point Academy
  • Las Animas School District
  • Montrose County School District
  • Poudre School District
  • Pueblo City School District

A complete guide of the 2009 Health and Wellness Best Practices Guide including action plans, resources, and statistics of some of these innovations can be found online at the Colorado Legacy Foundation website, www.colegacy.org. The Colorado Legacy Foundation is a privately-funded nonprofit that addresses emerging educational issues and sparks innovation in Colorado schools.
