GOV. RITTER AND TREASURER KENNEDY RELEASE LATEST ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT
Gov. Bill Ritter and State Treasurer Cary Kennedy today announced the release of the third annual State Taxpayer Accountability Report (STAR), showing their continued commitment to transparency and accountability. STAR provides information on the state's financial condition for Fiscal Year 2007-2008, the most recently available audited data. Gov. Ritter and Treasurer Kennedy issued the first STAR report during their first year in office.
"Creating STAR was one of the first steps we took toward improving the transparency and accountability of state government. This third report demonstrates our continued commitment to that goal," said Gov. Ritter. "During these challenging economic times it is more important than ever for Coloradans to have as much information as possible about the state's finances."
Treasurer Kennedy added, "It is vital that people have access to clear and understandable information about how their tax dollars are used. It is the responsibility of state government to take advantage of technological advances to make information readily available to taxpayers." In addition to the STAR report, taxpayers can view the state's investment portfolio, look up how much money their community gets in highway funds, or review a daily balance sheet for state funds.
Both Kennedy and Ritter have focused on providing greater transparency since taking office. During the past year Gov. Ritter has posted all department budgets on the state website along with budget fact sheets and information on the budget process. In addition to STAR, the Governor, Treasurer and Controller also collaborated on the development of the recently launched Transparency Online Project system that provides a searchable database of state revenues and expenditures.
