Gov. John Hickenlooper today ordered flags be lowered to half-staff on all public buildings statewide on Friday, Aug. 19, in honor of Army Chief Warrant Officer David R. Carter, who died Aug. 6 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Flags should be lowered from sunrise to sunset.
Carter, 47, of Aurora died of injuries sustained when the Chinook helicopter he was piloting was shot down. He was an instructor pilot and member of the Colorado Army National Guard’s heavy lift helicopter unit. The unit deployed in May to transport troops and cargo throughout Afghanistan.
Carter is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. A funeral is scheduled for Friday morning in Aurora, followed by burial in Fort Collins. Gov. Hickenlooper will attend both events.
