The Emergency Medical Practice Advisory Council, under the direction of the executive director of the department, is responsible for advising the department regarding the appropriate scope of practice for EMS Providers, including waivers to scope of practice, and for criteria for physicians to serve as EMS Medical Directors.

Colorado’s EMS regional medical directors (RMD) are physicians who serve as a resource to address emergency medical and trauma service issues. Colorado is divided into 11 Regional Emergency Medical and Trauma Advisory Councils (RETACs) and each has a medical director. The RMD meets quarterly to facilitate peer discussion and the sharing of best practices, in order to create improved levels of service, which have a positive impact on patient safety.
