Apply for Verification of Marriage, Civil Union, Dissolution (Divorce)?

We provide official verification of marriage, civil unions or dissolution (divorce) recorded with the Office of the State Registrar of Vital Statistics. 

 

Verifications of marriage, civil union or dissolution (divorce) are not the same as a certified copy of the certificate  or court document.  For a certified copy of the marriage certificate , civil union certificate or dissolution (divorce) decree, contact the county that issued the license or decree.

No. The Office of the State Registrar has an index of marriage and dissolution (divorce) records conducted in Colorado for the years 1900-1939 and 1975 to present. For records issued between 1939 and 1974 contact the county that issued the license or decree. Civil union records are available from May 1, 2013 to present.

Official verification of a common law marriage is not available. To record a marriage, the parties in a common law marriage may complete and sign an affidavit of marriage in front of a notary. This form may be filed with a Colorado county clerk and recorder’s office. Visit the Colorado state website for details about common law marriage.

Colorado recognizes both ceremonial and common law marriages. The Office of the State Registrar can provide verification for ceremonial marriages that have been registered with the State. The Colorado state website  provides more information about getting married and who can perform marriages in Colorado.

State vital records are protected, confidential information. Agencies that have a direct and tangible interest in researching these records may submit an  Application for Access to Marriage and Dissolution Index pdf file  to request access.
