Program Information

Spring Creek Youth Services Center (SCYSC) is one of four Division of Youth Corrections (DYC) multi-purpose, state owned and operated facilities. SCYSC is a 100-bed facility that provides secure detention, assessment and treatment services within the Southern Region of Colorado. The facility serves the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 16th Judicial Districts encompassing twenty-two counties in the southeast quadrant of the state.

One purpose of the facility is to provide detention services for El Paso and Teller counties. Youth are detained at SCYSC for one of two reasons: secure placement pending a court hearing, or to serve a detention sentence of up to 45 days. For youth in detention at SCYSC, a risk and needs assessment is provided to the court to assist in the identification of possible services that would facilitate a successful transition back into the community.

Spring Creek also serves as a regional assessment center for youth committed to the Division from the twenty-two counties within the Southern Region.  Assessment services are the initial step in the commitment continuum of care offered by DYC. The assessment process consists of applying evidence-based practices to measure various aspects of functioning. Findings from the assessment process are integrated to formulate individual treatment recommendations which reflect strategies for reducing identified criminogenic risk factors, including drug and alcohol, mental health, medical and educational needs.

A third purpose of the facility is to provide secure residential treatment services for committed youth. The treatment program philosophy is holistic; treating the whole individual while stressing accountability. The treatment program at SCYSC utilizes a number of evidence-based curriculums: Aggressive Replacement Therapy (ART), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Pathways for the substance abuse and sexual offender program. When youth reach the transition phase of treatment -- the phase of reentry into the community -- they are expected to obtain employment or continued educational services in the community. SCYSC is committed to delivering the best treatment available to youth in its care, providing each youth with the tools to heal and experience success.

Educational services at SCYSC are provided by the Colorado Springs School District eleven.  Educational opportunities include core subjects, elective subjects and vocational instruction. The education program fosters an environment in which at-risk youth can experience success by focusing on achievement in basic academic and pre-vocational skills.  While in school youth have the ability to work on grade-level appropriate work for credit transferable to high school graduation or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED). In the education program, students discover and explore ideas in ways which encourage internalization and ownership of the learning process.

Visitation

Visitation is an avenue to build and maintain healthy family and community relationships.  Families of youth in the care of the Colorado Division of Youth Corrections are encouraged to visit.
