How do you recognize VAT?
With VAT rates ranging from to 17.5 percent to 25 percent, learning if and how you can apply for a refund can be worth while.  Value-Added Tax (VAT) is called different names throughout Europe. For example, the acronym is MOMS in Sweden, MwST in Germany, TVA in France, and BTW in the Netherlands. Essentially these acronyms all refer to the same thing--a consumer tax that is charged on many types of business transactions.  Fortunately, most countries in Europe have adopted legislation that allows U.S. businesses and individuals to recover VAT paid on services.  VAT reclaim is the process of recovering VAT incurred within Europe.

What can you reclaim?
Eligible items for reclaim vary from country to country depending on a local adaptation of the European Directives. As a rule, many countries offer refunds on:

  • Trade shows
  • Accommodation costs
  • Meals
  • Car hire
  • Inter-company charges
  • Professional fees
  • Telecommunication charges
  • Outsourced services
  • Training courses, etc.
