John was born in Iowa, but his mother and two sisters moved to Missouri when his father was sent to Okinawa in World War II. John attended Northwest Missouri State University where he graduated with a degree in business economics. He went on to graduate from the University of Missouri School of Law, at Columbia, and then moved to Colorado.
He began his law career in Loveland with a lawyer who was then attorney for the Town of Estes Park. He practiced law in Loveland for seven years before moving to Estes Park with his family in 1975. While practicing in Loveland, John co-founded the Loveland Legal Aid Clinic; served as president of the Larimer County Bar Association and as representative to the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors; and as attorney for the Loveland Hospital District.
During his years of practice in Estes Park, he served on the School Board and Chamber of Commerce Board; co-founded Parents & Community for Kids; served as president of Sunrise Rotary Club; and as chairman of the School District Accountability Committee. He also held the positions of Assistant U.S. Magistrate for Rocky Mountain National Park and Assistant Larimer County Judge for Estes Park.
His wife, Connie, and he have six children, all of whom attended Estes Park schools.
