A Day in the Life of a Cadet

The Colorado State Patrol is a quasi-military Agency and its Academy is the starting block for this way of life. The Academy consists of three phases. Phase one is from week one through week seven, phase two is week eight through week 14 and phase three is week 15 through graduation.  During Phase One, cadets are required to stay on campus from Sunday night through the end of classes Friday. Staying at the Academy is optional after phase one.  The Cadet’s Academy training is ever evolving and geared towards putting the highest trained officers on the roadways of Colorado.

Life of Cadet

The Cadets have physical training every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 0530 and staff instructors supervise each of these sessions. The physical training starts with a warm up and then moves to a CrossFit workout of the day (WOD).  Workouts last approximately 20 – 30 minutes and the cadets learn their physical limitations as well as teamwork concepts during their WOD.  Cadets then shower and prepare for breakfast formation that takes place at 0700.  After breakfast Cadets fallout in formation for morning colors, which is at 0730.

Classes start at 0800 and can be either in their classroom or at one of the locations where their skills training will be conducted, i.e., drive track, shooting range, or gym for arrest control training. During the day cadets will get a 10-minute break each hour and will stay in class until 1200. At 1200 the cadets will form up as a class and go to lunch.  Cadets will be required to report to the drill hall (gym) on pre-determined days to drill. Drill is marching in formation and it helps the Cadets by instilling discipline, building teamwork, and teaching them to follow commands without question. Drill at the State Patrol Academy is conducted by staff drill instructors.

After drill, classes resume at 1300 and continue until 1700. At 1700 the Cadets will fall out for evening colors and then into chow formation.  There can be scheduled evening classes and mandatory study groups during all three phases.
