Transportation Best Practices - Colorado
Colorado Interagency Coordinating Council for Transportation Access and Mobility (Colorado Council) is facilitating the coordination of human service transportation programs throughout the state. A handbook has been produced to assist you in coordinating transportation resources and establishing local or regional coordinating councils. It provides a decision-making framework for determining how to establish your council to best address local mobility priorities. There are important issues for each region in the state to consider when setting up coordinating councils. This handbook guides you through the major steps in the process and provides information and referrals regarding available transportation services. At the end of each chapter is a short section on frequently asked questions. The appendices contain sample tools to use-including fact sheets on individual funding programs, literature resources and coordination policies. This is the first version of the handbook. It will be tested in 2009 and then improved based on comments from those who use it as a guide in the field. Your comments are solicited and welcome. Larimer County (Ft. Collins, CO) is the recipient of a Technical Assistance Grant to develop policies and procedures to implement a new service to a rural part of the county. Special Transit is a private, nonprofit organization located in Boulder, Colorado. Our mission is to promote independence and self-sufficiency for people with limited mobility by providing caring, customer-focused transportation options. Most notably, The Easy Rider Program is a, comprehensive one-on-one travel training program, available in Boulder County, designed to teach older adults and people with disabilities how to safely and confidently use public transportation to expand independent travel options. Training techniques are adapted based on an individual's abilities and assist in overcoming any barriers to riding the bus.
Senior Alternatives IN Transportation (SAINT) is a local non-profit agency providing personal transportation to people 60 years old and older, and people with disabilities that prevent them from driving. SAINT operates through the efforts of volunteers who donate their time and the use of their vehicles to help make a difference in the lives of those who cannot drive. SAINT volunteers have been helping their neighbors in Fort Collins and Loveland get to the doctor's office, the grocery store, the Senior Center and where ever else they need to go since 1983. Because of the efforts of our volunteers, seniors and disabled people who are unable to drive are able to live independently.
In 2008, volunteers in Fort Collins and Loveland provided over 20,000 rides to their neighbors.
