Early Reinstatement with Interlock

Person Filling Out Form

Some individuals subject to driving restraints related to alcohol issues may be allowed to reinstate their driving privileges ahead of their normal eligibility date if they participate in the Ignition Interlock program.

Important!  Legislative mandates effective 01/01/14 have significant changes to previous laws involving alcohol violations, Persistent Drunk Drivers (PDD) and the Ignition Interlock program.  Those changes include:

  • The reduction of the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) on a chemical test from 0.17 to 0.15 to designate you as a Persistent Drunk Driver.
  • The refusal of a chemical test at a traffic stop on or after 01/01/14 will now result in a Persistent Drunk Driver designation.
  • If you have refused a chemical test prior to 01/01/14 and were previously ineligible to reinstate early with Interlock, you may now either finish serving the remainder of your revocation and reinstate with full driving privileges, or serve at least two months and apply for early reinstatement with Interlock for one year.  You are not eligible for Financial Assistance in this case.
  • If you have multiple alcohol violations or refusals on your record, the wait time for early reinstatement with Interlock has been reduced to one or two months, respectively.

Other age and residency requirements apply.  Contact Driver Services at 303-205-5613 to determine if you qualify for early reinstatement.

Financial Assistance will become available for qualifying Persistent Drunk Drivers completing their initial Interlock installation on or after January 1, 2014.  For more information on Financial Assistance options, click here

Early reinstatement is limited to drivers who:

  • Are residents of Colorado
  • Are 21 years of age or older at the time of the violation
  • Have satisfied all reinstatement requirements (other than time)

(Reinstatements beginning 01/01/14)

  • Have a Per Se or DUI conviction and have already served one month for the alcohol related restraint; or
  • Have a Refusal of a BAC test and have already served two months for the alcohol related restraint

(Reinstatements prior to 01/01/14)

  • Have a 1st Per Se or DUI conviction and have already served one month for the alcohol related restraint; or
  • Have an alcohol related restraint that is longer than one year in length and have already served one year for the alcohol related restraint

Drivers wishing to know if they are eligible to participate in the Interlock program should call Driver Services at 303-205-5613 to enquire about early reinstatement.
