Before applying for a Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instruction Permit, you must hold a valid Colorado Driver's License. The CDL Instruction Permit is required before the CDL Driving Skills Test may be administered. When both written and road tests are completed a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) can be issued.

To receive the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instruction Permit you must:

  • Show acceptable identification and proof legal presence documents
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Show proof of your Social Security Number
  • Show evidence of a current passed DOT medical examination within the last 24 months
  • Clear Commercial Driver's License Information System (CDLIS) and NationalDriver Register (NDR) records checks
  • Pass the required CDL knowledge tests.  (CDL Study Manual)
  • Pay the $14.00 fee and be issued an instruction permit.

If you pass the required knowledge test(s) and are issued an instruction permit, you can take the CDL driving skills test. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:

  • Pre-trip Inspection
  • Basic Vehicle Control
  • On-Road Driving

You must take these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
