Car in Driving Education Course

For a list of Driver Education Schools approved by the state to offer driver education, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, administration of the written knowledge test or the drive test, click here.  The list is updated on a monthly basis and contains contact information as well as a list of what type of education each school offers.

For those wishing to obtain a permit between the age of 15 years and 15 years and 6 months you will need to complete an approved Driver Education course and present a course completion statement showing that the class was completed within 6 months of applying for the permit.

For those wishing to obtain a permit between the age of 15 years and 6 months and 16 years you will need to complete an approved Driver Education course or a 4 hour pre-qualification driver awareness program.

After age 16, no formal driver education is needed to obtain a permit.

Any minor wishing to obtain a license before the age of 16 years and 6 months may complete one of the following:

  • 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a driving instructor from an approved school
  • 12 hours of behind-the-wheel training with their parent, guardian, or alternate permit supervisor if there is no approved school offering at least 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training per week located within 30 miles of the permit holder's residence

Anyone wishing to obtain a license prior to age 18 needs to complete a department approved log sheet showing not less than 50 hours (10 of which must be at night) of driving experience with a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult who signed the affidavit of liability.

Most Driver Education schools offer 6 hour behind-the-wheel instruction as a part of their curriculum.

The list of organizations are not an extension of the Colorado Department of Revenue. They are private businesses that charge a fee for their services. This program gives you numerous options for completing your license.
