GOV. RITTER CONGRATULATES COLORADO RESEARCHERS FOR RECOVERY ACT GRANTS
Gov. Bill Ritter today lauded five researchers at Colorado universities for their selection as part of 69 early career scientists nationwide slated to share $85 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to support their research.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the five-year research grants as part of DOE’s new Early Career Research Program. The new effort is designed to bolster the nation’s workforce by providing support to exceptional researchers during the crucial early years of their career.
“I congratulate these young Colorado scientists for this important recognition,” said Gov. Bill Ritter. “They shine as another great example of how our researchers at Colorado universities continue to be national leaders in innovation and achievement.”
Under the program, the five Colorado scientists – four from the University of Colorado and one from Colorado State University – will receive at least $150,000 per year to cover summer salary and research expenses. Awardees were selected from a pool of 1,750 university- and national laboratory-based applicants. Colorado was one of only two states out of 21 with five researchers chosen.
“This new program reflects the Administration’s strong commitment to creating jobs and new industries through scientific innovation,” said Secretary of Energy Chu. “Strong support of scientists in the early career years is crucial to renewing America’s scientific workforce and ensuring U.S. leadership in discovery and innovation for many years to come.”
