SEDGWICK COUNTY ARRA FUNDING AND PROJECTS

 


 

Based on the latest information available to the Governor’s Office. This report is not comprehensive because new Recovery Act awards are announced frequently. This does not include funds - including income tax cuts, increased COBRA benefits, increased funds to cover Medicaid services and others - that cannot be broken down by county. The numbers below represent funds that have been awarded and are expected to be received over the life of the Recovery Act. The funds are distributed to a wide range of groups in the county and do not necessarily touch county government.

 


 

COMMUNITY SERVICES / SAFETY NET:

 

$170,272

 

Community Services Block grant to the Northeast CO Association of Local Governments, which serves Sedgwick, Yuma, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, and Washington counties, for poverty reduction and revitalization of low-income communities. Funds will provide services to the low income of the region through partnerships with One Morgan County, Morgan Community College, the Small Business Development Center, Phillips County Family Education Services, Northeastern Junior College, Rural Solutions, Caring Ministries of Morgan County, and Educating through Community Gardens - CSU Extension.

Extra 13 percent in food stamp benefits to about 200 people in Sedgwick County between April 1- October 31, 2009.

Grant to the Food Bank of Sedgwick County to distribute emergency food to households and provide meals to needy people

 



 

PUBLIC SAFETY: 

$309,894

 

Justice Assistance grant to the District Attorney's Office, 13th Judicial District, which serves Sedgwick, Yuma, Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, and Washington counties, for technological upgrades in three primary areas: audio/visual recording, investigations/surveillance, and interoperable communications. This project will establish a vertical model of prosecution (one prosecutor and one investigator throughout the case) for all sex assaults in the 13th Judicial District. The Vertical Prosecution Sexual Assault Unit will assist in investigations; prosecute adult and child sex crimes; and assist in training local law enforcement, non-profit organizations, and community to decrease cases being dismissed or not filed due to inexperience and insufficient evidence collected.

Justice Assistance grant to the Town of Telluride Marshal's Office to replace current stand-alone Records Management System with Spillman RMS.

Violence against Women Act (VAWA) grant to SARA, Inc., which serves Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties, to fund a victim centered collaborative multidisciplinary effort to coordinate and improve the systems' responses of the many agencies addressing violence against women.

Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant to SARA, Inc., which serves Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties, to fund one .5 FTE bilingual Spanish speaking Family Advocate position to provide direct services to victims.

 



 

TRANSPORTATION:

Grant to reconstruct 11 miles of eastbound I-76 between Sedgwick and the Nebraska border in concrete.

 



 

WORKFORCE SERVICES AND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:

$383,271

 

Workforce Investment Act Funds for job training in the Eastern Region, which includes Sedgwick, Yuma, Kit Carson, Logan, Phillips, Morgan, Washington, Lincoln, Cheyenne, and Elbert counties.

Wagner Peyser (WP) & Reemployment Services (RES) grant for the Eastern Region, which includes Sedgwick, Yuma, Kit Carson, Logan, Phillips, Morgan, Washington, Lincoln, Cheyenne, and Elbert counties.

Extra 20 weeks of benefits, through the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, for 16 people (as of Nov. 30, 2009) in Sedgwick County.

Extra $25 per week in unemployment benefits through the Federal Additional Compensation program, for 33 people (as of Nov. 30, 2009) in Sedgwick County.

Additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits through a new state law given to 3 people as of Nov. 30, 2009 in Sedgwick County.

 



 

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT:

Estimated funds to be spent for free energy efficiency upgrades in low-income homes in Sedgwick County

Energy Efficiency Conservation Block grant to the Colorado State University Extension Service for energy efficiency upgrades in buildings in Logan, Morgan, Washington, Phillips, Sedgwick and Yuma counties.

 



 

EDUCATION:

Title I funds for Sedgwick County schools with high percentages of low-income students.
