SAGUACHE COUNTY ARRA FUNDING AND PROJECTS

 


 

Based on the latest information available to the Governor’s Office. This report is not comprehensive because new Recovery Act awards are announced frequently. This does not include funds - including income tax cuts, increased COBRA benefits, increased funds to cover Medicaid services and others - that cannot be broken down by county. The numbers below represent funds that have been awarded and are expected to be received over the life of the Recovery Act. The funds are distributed to a wide range of groups in the county and do not necessarily touch county government.

 


 

COMMUNITY SERVICES / SAFETY NET:

 

$200,428

 

Community Services Block grant to the San Luis Valley Community Action Agency, which serves Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties, for poverty reduction and revitalization of low-income communities. SLVCAA will work with local employment agencies, public school districts, and local higher education facilities to provide education or continuing education to local residents to prepare for employment opportunities in the area.

Extra 13 percent in food stamp benefits to about 1,000 people in Saguache County between April 1- October 31, 2009.

Grant for the Child Care & Development Fund in Saguache County.

 



 

TRANSPORTATION:

$4,779,826

 

Grant to resurface eight miles of US 285 south of Saguache in asphalt.

 



 

WORKFORCE SERVICES AND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:

$573,152

 

Workforce Investment Act Funds for job training to the South Central County Region, which includes Alamosa, Saguache, Mineral, Rio Grande, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano, and Las Animas counties.

 

$244,678

 

Wagner Peyser (WP) & Reemployment Services (RES) to the South Central County Region, which includes Alamosa, Saguache, Mineral, Rio Grande, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano, and Las Animas counties.

 

$249,257

 

Extra 20 weeks of benefits, through the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, for 69 people (as of Nov. 30, 2009) in Saguache County.

 

$104,425

 

Extra $25 per week in unemployment benefits through the Federal Additional Compensation program, for 328 people (as of Nov. 30, 2009) in Saguache County.

 

$19,910

 

Additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits through a new state law given to 12 people as of Nov. 30, 2009 in Saguache County.

 



 

ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT: 

$491,279

 

Estimated funds to be spent for free energy efficiency upgrades in low-income homes in Saguache County.

 

$150,000

 

Energy Efficiency Conservation Block grant to the Colorado State University Extension Service for energy efficiency upgrades to buildings in Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache counties.

 

$190,000

 

Grant for improvements at the Baca National Wildlife Refuge.

 



 

EDUCATION: 

$332,767

 

Title I funds for Saguache County schools with high percentages of low-income students.

McKinney-Vento Homeless Education grant to Mountain Valley RE1 School District for services to students who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Grant to Saguache County Community Council Center Head Start for their Head Start 2009 ARRA COLA Quality Improvement Program.

 



 

HOUSING:

US Department of Housing and Urban Development Public Housing Capital Fund to the Center Housing Authority

 



 

SMALL BUSINESS SERVICES:

$796,000              Guaranteed loan through the USDA and First Southwest Bank to MJ Investments, a group of small business owners. The loan allows the group to build two buildings in Crestone that will house a grocery store, Laundromat, diner, lumber yard and hardware store.

 

OTHER FEDERAL GRANTS: 

$2,550

 

Independent Agency grant to Saguache United Methodist Church under the Colorado Governor's Commission on Community Service AmeriCorps Recovery Project.
