SUMMIT/EAGLE COUNTIES -- The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins another project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) this week. In addition to rotomilling and asphalt paving Interstate 70 between East Vail (mile 180) and Silverthorne Hill (mile 204), the project consists of extensive bridge rehabilitation work on 12 to 16 bridges, including new expansion joints, waterproofing and new bridge rails.

"Proper investment in our transportation infrastructure is essential to the overall health and prosperity of our state," said Congressman Jared Polis. "Without good, safe roads, it would be nearly impossible for growing mountain communities like Vail and Frisco to attract new businesses, create jobs, and thrive as world-renown tourist destinations. I am thrilled to see this latest installation of recovery funds coming to our area, creating jobs and laying a stronger foundation for tomorrow."

Due to the length of the project (24 miles) and the number of structures that are being rehabilitated, paving and bridge work will need to take place concurrently at different locations. Single lane closures will be in place through each work zone on eastbound and/or westbound I-70 during project hours, with a reduced speed limit of 45 mph. Work will be suspended during the 4th of July and Labor Day holidays.

Beginning Monday, June 1:

Initial construction underway with bridge work at Officers Gulch (Exit 198) in Ten Mile Canyon

Monday -- Sunday, through June 19, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Beginning Monday, June 8:

Rotomilling and paving operations on the right lane of eastbound I-70 from East Vail to the top of Vail Pass

Monday -- Friday, through June 19, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Beginning Monday, June 22:

Rotomilling and paving operations and bridge work -- locations to be determined

Monday -- Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Only minor delays are anticipated during project hours but CDOT will monitor traffic and adjust or remove lane closures if long backups develop.

Weekly lane closure information about this project and others will be available at or by calling 511.

Asphalt Paving Co. of Golden, CO is the contractor for $11.5 million project, of which $8 million is funded by ARRA. It is scheduled for completion in November 2009.

To date, CDOT has committed funds for 32 ARRA projects across the state. Among those, 27 projects have been advertised for bids and CDOT has selected contractors for 21 projects. To see a list of projects, go to
