GOV. RITTER STATEMENT ON GREAT SAND DUNES SELECTION FOR NEW QUARTER

Gov. Ritter today praised the U.S. Mint's selection of Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park as one of 56 locations to be featured in the new America the Beautiful Quarter Series. Gov. Ritter had recommended the Great Sand Dunes to the U.S. Mint earlier this year.

"Designated in 2004 as the country's 58th national park, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of Colorado's archeological, ecological and cultural crowned jewels. It's a defining feature not just of the San Luis Valley, but is also one of Colorado's signature landmarks," Gov. Ritter said.

"The Great Sand Dunes National Park is among the most biologically and geologically diverse places in America, supporting alpine peaks, desert valleys, pristine waterways and the tallest dunes in North America. On behalf of the people of Colorado, I'm extremely pleased that this timeless treasure will be featured as part of the America the Beautiful Quarter Series."

The Great Sand Dunes site was originally established as a national monument in 1932.
