GOV. RITTER MAKES APPOINTMENTS TO BOARDS

 

Gov. Bill Ritter today announced the appointments of two dozen Coloradans to several boards and commissions.

 

Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children

 

Authorized by House Bill 08-1317, Gov. Ritter has appointed Fountain-Fort Carson Superintendent Cheryl Walker as the first Colorado commissioner of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

 

Colorado is one of about 20 states to join the compact, which is designed to create common, standardized policies to help with school transfers and placements for military children who move frequently from state to state.

 

Each compact state appoints a commissioner who is that state's voting representative. The commissioner serves at the pleasure of the governor and the appointment does not require Senate confirmation.

 

Colorado Commission on the Aging

(for terms expiring July 1, 2012)

 

Debera K. Stewart of Silt

Sheila Casey of Durango

Stephen M. Bender off Colorado Springs

Gretchen G. Cerveny of  Wheat Ridge

Mark N. Shelton of Fort Collins

Karyn P. Leible of Thornton

 

Appointments to the 17-member commission are for four years and require Senate confirmation. The commission studies problems facing Colorado's elder population and promotes the establishment of local programs to address those problems.

 

Ground Water Commission

 

Dennis W. Coryell of Burlington, for a term expiring May 1, 2012

Larry W. Clever of Grand Junction, for a term expiring May 1, 2012

 

Appointments to the 12-member commission are for four years and require Senate confirmation. The commission determines the boundaries of designated ground-water basins and considers well permit applications.

 

State Conservation Board

 

Patricia R. Meakins of Haxtun, re-appointed to a term expiring Dec. 31, 2012.

 

Appointments to the nine-member board do not require Senate confirmation. The board coordinates programs, training and the organization of eight state conservation districts and federal agencies.

 

CoverColorado Long-Term Funding Task Force

(for terms expiring July 1, 2009)

 

Pam M. Nicholson of Colorado Springs

Julie A. Hoerner of Denver

James R. Hertzel of Parker

 

Per legislation, appointments to the 11-member task force expire on July 1, 2009, and do not require Senate confirmation. The task force will develop a plan for the long-term funding of CoverColorado to ensure its future financial health and viability. CoverColorado is a nonprofit entity created by the Colorado Legislature to provide medical insurance for eligible Colorado residents who, because of a pre-existing medical condition, are unable to get coverage from private insurers.

 

Colorado Beef Council Authority Board of Directors

 

Tim E. Thatcher of Pueblo, for a term expiring July 1, 2012

Steven J. Williams of Greeley, for a term expiring July 1, 2012

 

Appointments to the eight-member board are for four years and do not require Senate confirmation. The authority promotes the increased consumption of Colorado beef, researches beef production methods, advancements and other matters with economic impacts on the beef industry.

 

Board of Trustees for the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind

(for terms expiring July 1, 2012)

 

John C. Dickinson of Longmont

David S. Ek of Colorado Springs

Dr. Morris D. Ververs of Simla

David Dawson of Boulder

 

Appoints to the seven-member board are for four years and require Senate confirmation. The board advises and consults with the Colorado commissioner of education regarding the management of the school and the education of its students.

 

Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority Board of Directors

 

Beth Lamberson Warren of Durango, for a term expiring June 30, 2012

Kent C. Veio of Denver, for a term expiring June 30, 2012

 

Appointments to the seven-member board are for four years and require Senate confirmation. The authority issues bonds to provide affordable financing for educational and cultural buildings and equipment owned by nonprofit institutions.

 

Colorado Racing Commission

 

Jack K. Pretti of Rifle, for a term expiring July 1, 2012

Mary Sharon Wells of Golden, for a term expiring July 1, 2012

 

Appointments to the five-member commission are for four years and require Senate confirmation. The commission regulates and supervises pari-mutuel wagering.

 

Securities Board

 

Paul E. Washington of Boulder, for a term expiring July 1, 2011

Herrick K. Lidstone Jr. of Centennial, for a term expiring July 1, 2011

 

Appointments to the five-member board are for three years and require Senate confirmation. The board aids and advises the Colorado securities commissioner in the crafting of rules, issuance of orders, formulation of policies, setting of fees and with other issues affecting the Colorado Division of Securities and securities regulations.
