DENVER — Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 — Gov. John Hickenlooper issued this statement today about the death of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Liam Nevins of Denver.
“We are eternally indebted to Staff Sgt. Liam Nevins for his service and commitment to our country and to the Colorado Army National Guard. His life was cut short, along with two of his fellow soldiers, during his fourth deployment in the defense of our nation. He was a true American hero. Sgt. Nevins’ family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers as we join the nation in mourning his death.”
Nevins was killed Sept. 21, 2013, in Logar Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He died of injuries sustained in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, from small arms fire. Nevins was assigned to B Company, 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Army National Guard, Watkins, Colo.
