The Colorado Energy Office (CEO), established the Community Energy Coordinator (CEC) program in the second quarter of 2010 to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy programs in Colorado’s mountain and rural communities. The program was established with “seed” funding provided by a U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG). The program demonstrates a unique, effective and sustainable use of federal funds by distributing them directly to rural and mountain communities to develop renewable energy and energy efficiency capacity. 52 rural and mountain communities in Colorado are home to the 19 Community Energy Coordinator programs. The CECs are a talented and passionate group of individuals who work on their own, with non-profits, and/or at universities to collaborate with local government, community groups, businesses, and utilities and build a clean energy strategy that meets the specific needs of the region that they serve. Each CEC has established an advisory board made up of community stakeholders to develop a three to five year Strategy and Action Plan for their region. The Advisory Board also provides regular input and feedback regarding the progress of the CEC’s work in the community.
