Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The State Demography Office in the Division of Local Government supports demographic analysis and population estimates with GIS. Our office works with the US Census Bureau and we assist state and local governments through various grant programs.

Below are the census programs our office has been involved in:

  • Boundary and Annexation Survey- The US Census Bureau conducts the Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) annually to collect information about selected legally defined geographic areas. The BAS is used to update information about the legal boundaries and names of all governmental units in the United States. The Census Bureau uses the boundary information collected in the BAS to tabulate data for various censuses and surveys, such as the American Community Survey and other Census Bureau programs such as the Population Estimates Program. Our office will be ivolved in this program throughout the 2010 decade.
  • 2010 Census Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA)
  • Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP)
  • Census Redistricting Data Program- During Phase 2 of the Redistricting Data Program, Voting District boundaries are enumerated to the lowest level of census geography for the 2010 Census. States submit block boundary suggestions for inclusion in the 2010 Census block tabulations during this phase of the Redistricting Data Program as well. A verification phase is included for all components (VTD/SLD/Congressional) of this phase.
