The CBI provides criminal investigative support to Law Enforcement agencies within the state of Colorado. The Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS) enables the CBI to prevent, detect and investigate criminal activity throughout the state, at the request of local law enforcement agencies, other state agencies, or by order of the office of the Governor.

The Major Crimes Unit provides a full range of criminal investigative assistance, to include; homicide, arson, sexual assault, burglary, theft, critical incidents and public corruption. The CBI assists local agencies in any of these functions at their request. The CBI can respond only at the specific request of a police department, sheriff's office and the district attorney's office. Additionally, the CBI performs investigations of suspected criminal activity when directed by the Governor and has the statutory authority to initiate investigations of organized crime that transcends local jurisdictional boundaries and fugitives.
